The women report on nations riven by war or throttled by repressive, often brutal regimes. They endure threats and attacks. Sometimes they sacrifice their lives for their journalism.

A handful receive wider attention when the International Women’s Media Foundation presents them with its annual Courage In Journalism Award. But for the most part their work is known only in their own countries.

Wouldn’t it be terrific, Zuade Kaufman has long thought, if the reportage of these fearless and talented women could be showcased together for a broader audience. Well, now it will be, thanks to the persistence of Kaufman, publisher of the website Truthdig, and the generosity of the NoVo Foundation.
