President Obama nominated Gary Locke, the first Chinese-American commerce secretary, to be the next U.S. ambassador to arguably the most important country in the world. Locke’s grandfather, who left China to work in Washington state as a servant paid in English lessons, would be proud, but then he would have been happy just to see Gary govern Washington, another of his grandson’s many accomplishments.

Mr Locke, who joined the Obama administration in March 2009, is a former two-term Democratic governor of Washington state.
