GOP biggies from the party’s past are mouthing off all over the place.
Former presidential candidate and Sen. Bob Dole, who gave us the Americans With Disabilities Act, among other things, said, “I think they ought to put a sign on the national committee doors that says ‘closed for repairs’ until New Year’s Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas.”
When Olympia Snowe retired from the Senate, she said she would rather quit than put up with endless partisanship and filibustering, although she could often be counted on to participate. Speaking more recently on MSNBC, the former senator from Maine said, “The Republican Party is undergoing some, you know, significant and serious changes and they are going to have to rethink their approach as a political party and how they are going to regroup and become a governing majority party that appeals to a broader group of Americans than they do today.”
Speaking of MSNBC, that network has long been the refuge of Joe Scarborough, who currently hosts a morning show. Scarborough, of course, was the representative of Florida’s 1st District in the House from 1995-2001. During that time he voted to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and sponsored a bill to withdraw from the United Nations. On his show Tuesday, Scarborough had this to say: “I like winning, I’m different. I definitely am a RINO in that respect, my dear howling friends. I like to win. In fact, I do win. That’s just what I do. I go out — I don’t know if you knew this or not — the idea in elections is to get more votes than the other side.”
So there you have it. Republicans of all stripes are venting en masse. Let’s see what, if anything, comes of it.
