Defense Secretary Robert Gates outlined his spending cuts on Monday, scrapping, among other boondoggles, the F-22, a fighter plane that apparently specialized in Super Bowl flyovers. Despite the cuts, America still spends more on defense than the rest of the world combined. And then there's the cost of two wars to think about.

Multiple news outlets, from ABC to Fox, now confirm that Robert Gates will retain his post as secretary of defense for at least the first year of the Obama administration. The president-elect will roll out Gates and his other hawks during a national security team unveiling next week.

Gates Might Stick Around

The Financial Times is reporting that Barack Obama is keen to have Robert Gates stay on as defense secretary. The paper says the two are currently negotiating their differences, but then that's the whole point: Obama wants people who disagree with him in his Cabinet.

The Department of Defense refused to allow the senior civilian in charge of its Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office to testify in Thursday's hearing on sexual assault in the military. Above, Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, who reported being raped in 2007 and whose body was found buried in a backyard in 2008.

McClellan Still Ducking Queries on Weapons Trailers

The presidential spokesman won't say at what point the president learned of a Pentagon report which concluded that Iraqi weapons trailers discovered after the invasion were not--as Bush later claimed--WMD factories. No wonder McClellan won't answer. This could amount to proof positive that Bush outright lied about WMD.
