As budget hawks continue their attack on spending cuts around the country, it might be useful to look at the Pentagon after a report released Thursday claimed that at least $7 billion in taxpayer funds is being wasted on purchases of spare parts that the military ends up not needing. Alexander Haig was chief of staff to Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal, secretary of state under Ronald Reagan, NATO's supreme military commander and a longtime Republican hawk. He died Saturday in Baltimore at 85 from complications from an infection. Dig deeper ( 1 Min. Read )

Is the master of the rhetorical question back? Well, in spirit at least. Truthdig contributor Allen McDuffee warns that a group of Democratic foreign policy hawks is pushing one of Donald Rumsfeld's big ideas for overhauling the U.S. military.
